A MacBook overheats when something is working the CPU hard or airflow is blocked. Check Activity Monitor for runaway processes, keep the vents and underside clear of soft surfaces, close heavy browser tabs, and have the fans and heatsink cleaned if the machine is several years old and dusty.
First, check Activity Monitor. Sort by CPU. If WindowServer, kernel_task, or a single browser tab is pegged at 100 percent, the heat is software, not hardware. Quit the offender or restart.
Physical airflow matters more than people think. Using a MacBook on a duvet, a pillow, or your lap blocks the bottom vents on every model. Use a hard surface or a small stand. The temperature drop is often dramatic.
Older MacBooks accumulate dust in the fans and heatsinks. After three or four years, fan curves start spinning earlier and louder for the same workload. A careful internal cleaning and fresh thermal paste can drop sustained temperatures by 10 to 15 degrees Celsius.
